Transparencies

Every now and then a product or trend comes along that just blows us away. We love the look, love the ideas, love the projects we see other's doing, but have no idea how to achieve that result ourselves. We smile, say "oh that's neat" and walk on, so unsure of our own talents that we don't even try.

Transparent products have been one of those things. They look amazing, come in countless designs and forms, are loved by just about everyone, but yet *no one* knows what to do with them. Some of us even buy every one on the market (me!) and then just sit on them for years never quite knowing what to do next.

So this month we're going to feature Hambly transparencies and hopefully give you some good ideas to inspire some works-of-art from your own scrap room. We'll share some basic tips and techniques, and as always if you have any further questions, comment below or simply ask us in the store!

How do you use a transparency?

Most of them are called "transparent overlays" because they are intended to 'overlay' part or all of your project. Whether you design a layout and then lay the transparency on top as an overall embellishment or use the transparency like you would a patterned paper and build your layers on top of it is up to you.

You can trim the transparency and just use a small portion, or use the full 12x12 sheet. With the advent and increased popularity of clear acrylic mini-albums, many people are also turning to transparencies to add pages to their albums (or to make their own album all together)

How you use it and what you use it for is completely up to you, don't be afraid to experiment!

How do you secure a transparency:

This depends largely on the printed pattern on the sheet. If it has a large, bold print you can easily get away with hiding Glu Dots under the printed portions.

If it has a busy pattern, your basic dot-roller adhesive will work just fine.

Other options include using brads or buttons in the corners (or anywhere that will be pleasing to the eye) Stapling the transparency is another effective way to attach it to your page (check office supply stores for different colored staples that match your project!)

One of my favorite ways to attach a transparency is using acrylic paint. Simply paint all or part of the backside of your transparency with a complimentary color and quickly attach it to your background page/cardstock. Not only does it help the pattern of the transparency stand out, but the paint also works as an adhesive!

My personal favorite is machine stitching the transparency (or pretty much anything for that matter) to the layout. You get a good, solid hold and a cute extra design element. Tip: Buy needles that are meant to sew through heavy fabric (like denim) to sew on scrapbook pages. They are more durable and able to punch through thicker items or more layers without breaking (learned that from personal experience!)

Another thing to note, if you are using the transparency simply as an overlay (whether you build the page on the transparency itself and lay it over cardstock, or build the page on cardstock and lay the transparency over that) you can simply slide the two pieces into your page protector without adhering them at all. The page protector itself will help both pieces stay put without the fuss of extra embellishments.

What kind of products can you use on/with transparencies?

Journaling: We recommend Slick Writers by American Crafts. Unlike other markers and journaling pens, they won't smear on the slick surface or slip around when you're trying to write.

Stamping: Staz On is the recommended brand by almost everyone. Just remember one thing when you're using it: it's called "Staz On" for a reason, careful where you apply it! If you are using standard office-supply transparencies you will notice they have two sides, one that is slick and one that is slightly grainy. I have found that you can stamp on the grainy side with any ink (I use Versa Magic and Brilliance) and the ink adheres to the transparency just fine, just give it a few seconds to dry (I have not personally tested this on Hambly transparencies, have you? Let me know if it works...)

Let us know if we can answer any other questions about these great products for you! If you have any pages, cards, or mini albums completed using Hambly products, send it in! We'd love to see and show off your work!

Idea Books

Ok guys, this month we are going to feature possibly one of the most invaluable tools you can ever own: Idea Books.

They come in many different shapes, sizes, and forms. Many different people and companies produce them. You will find everything from cards and layouts to tissue boxes and lampshades. Yet they all relate to one thing: inspiring your creativity!

All it takes is one look inside of an idea book to become instantly awed, amazed, and inspired. Let the pro’s do the work for you. Whether you scraplift a layout or card directly, or pull the general design from the lampshade or a color scheme from a vase, it is impossible not to be inspired on every single page.

Here at SBA, we keep a large selection of idea books on hand to keep you constantly reinventing the way you go about creating. Here’s a general review on a few of our favorites:

Photo Freedom by Stacy Julian:  Brand new and sheer genius, this book will easily transform the chaos of a photo library into a manageable, trackable system that will get you creating faster than ever. While not all of Stacy’s ideas will fit everyone’s style, her general tips and tricks will inspire everyone to find a way that works and stick to it. It can be a quick read or one that you can read-as-you-go while organizing step by step.

Gifts from the Heart by Paper Crafts: By far one of my favorite special issues ever. So many incredibly cool gifts and ideas packed into this one little book. I’m one of those people who loves the idea of giving handmade gifts, but when it comes down to making it I run out of ideas before I even begin. This handy idea book breaks them down into various sections so it’s easy to find and be inspired by exactly the kind of gift I am looking to give.

Sketches by Becky Higgins: Volume One, Two, and now the Best of… collection, these books are priceless! Whether you’re looking to get as many pictures on a page as possible, or just need some general guidelines for clean, classic designs, these are the books for you! Becky’s timeless style and gift for balancing the perfect layouts is transferred into each and every sketch she gives you.

Paper Crafts 101: I can’t preach enough how important this issue is, especially for beginners. Every day we hear questions like “how do you use ribbon?” “what is an eyelet?” and other seemingly simple questions. If there was a straight forward, easy answer it would be one thing. But since each embellishment, each idea, has so many different answers it is impossible for us to list them all. Paper Crafts 101 lists tons of ideas for several basic and not-so-basic embellishments and techniques. SUCH a great issue for both beginner and advanced scrappers!

Creating Keepsakes and Simple Scrapbooks Monthly Issues: Monthly and bi-monthly issues keep you constantly inspired with the latest and greatest designs, products, and techniques. Buy only the issues that inspire you the most, and save money by not subscribing and getting magazines month after month that don’t fit your needs.

Pebbles!

Ooooh how we LOVE Pebbles! Their adorable lines, the way everything coordinates making designing pages so easy, their versatility and their prices; everything about them makes us giddy.

Here's - in our opinion - the best thing that they make: KITS!  They all include 6 papers, image and word or letter stickers, cardstock die cuts, and ribbon! It's pretty much everything you need to create a bunch of projects.

On their packaging, they include ideas for two layouts and a card - but trust me - you can do so much more! Last month on our Recipe Board we featured the Baby Boy kit. With one kit, a few sheets of cardstock and some coordinating brads and buttons, we completed 8 layouts, 3 cards, and 1 mini book! All from one kit! Priced at $10.99 each, that's one good deal!

Here's a peek at some that we have in stock right now:

P6Make a Wish: We carried this paper in bulk once and it sold out within a week. The gorgeous color combo of brown, white, and turquoise is so versatile and fun! The designs that consist of polka dots, stripes, and of course the "wish flower" (as deemed by a certain 4 year old I know) dandelions!

P9Nellie's Garden: So perfect for spring! Beautiful pastels and flowery patterns make this an easy pick.

P7My Baby Girl: Absolutely the perfect kit for a new mom (or one who is trying to get caught up) because everything coordinates perfectly! No thinking, no need to shop around for perfect embellishments or coordinating ribbon, everything is included so all you have to do is assemble!

So there's a mini teaser for you :) We also carry other Girl/Boy kits, Summer, Birthday, Easter, Snow, Zoo, School and several others. Pretty much if you need to scrap it - Pebble's makes a kit for it!

And, for those of you who like to choose your own, we also carry a lot of Pebble's lines in bulk. This way you can purchase the number of sheets of paper, stickers, and die cuts that you want!

So come on in, check them out, and get inspired :)

American Crafts!

Oh how we love this company! Their products are beautiful, versatile, coordinated, easy to use, and easy on the wallet. What's not to love?

Here's a brieft history of American Crafts, stolen straight from their website :)

"Steve and Alma Mitchell founded American Crafts in 1995. Soon thereafter their sons Jeff and Wayne joined them. In 2001, after a successful tour of providing high quality products to the general craft market, American Crafts decided to focus on their passion for Scrapbooking and create innovative, high quality, well designed products specifically for the Scrapbooking industry.

Since then, we have steadily expanded our product offering and elevated our position within the market. We attribute our success primarily to what we consider our greatest strengths: high quality products and superior customer service. We look forward to many more years of creating awesome tools to make preserving memories fun and easy."

Now we won't lie, we were a little on the hesitant side when we first discovered American Crafts had broken into the scrapbooking industry. Their papers were bold, graphic, and bright. While we had been enjoying their craft staples for years like their amazing Precision Point Pens, Galaxy Markers, and more, we were a little cautious about this new, bold side. But we dove in and haven't looked back.

Yes, they have bold papers. They also have soft, beautiful ones. Not only are their designs graphic, but they also have classic, timeless ones. They have hundreds of papers to choose from, in every color and design you could imagine.

Ac2_3

And the best part about them? They're generic. Now some people see this as bad but here's what we love: you can use the exact same paper on a baby page, a wedding page, or a sports page, and it would still look fabulous! We have a ton of customers who come in looking for 'specific' papers - ultrasound papers, first day of soccer practice papers, wedding in Maui papers, etc. - and we love pointing them in the direction of American Crafts where they can meet all their needs with a single company. No, the papers won't say "5 month ultrasound picture" on them, but look at how beautifully those soft colors and patterns compliment that wonderful memory!

The other great part: Coordination!! Not only does American Crafts make fabulous double sided papers, they make STICKERS! And PHOTO CORNERS! And RIBBON! (oh my!) And so much more. And they allllll coordinate with each other. The green that you see in the paper will match perfectly with the green you see on those chipboard thickers. The pink in that paper matches perfectly with this pink ribbon, or those photo corners, etc. No more guesswork, no more jumping around the entire store trying to find a brand that makes a color of embellishment similar. It's all found in American Crafts products.

*pant pant pant*

Ok, I could seriously talk/write your ears/eyes off all night on American Crafts. But I won't, because I'm nice like that. But in the mean time here's a few cool things from American Crafs:

It's For Fun - Check out this part of their website for cool desktop backgrounds and icons!

Studio Blog - SBA isn't the only one blogging, check out the amazing AC Studio Blog for great ideas!

I'll be posing some tips/techniques soon so if you have any questions/concerns about using AC products then leave a comment and I'll be sure to address it. I'll also be putting up a gallery so if any of you have some layouts done with American Crafts products send them my way and I'll put them up!

Templates!

Possibly the biggest comeback ever for the scrapbooking market has been TEMPLATES! They were popular back in the day (don't we all have priceless photos cut into hearts and stars thanks to them?) and have made a huge return thanks to companies like The Crafters Workshop who have modernized their designs and products. Now appearing in classic designs like circles and paisley as well as modern motif's like doodled flowers and swirls, these handy little tools are perfect for every scrapbooker, every style, and every skill level.

FAQ

What are they?  Templates are designed to make embellishing, designing, and doodling on your pages easier.

How do you use them? They are made out of thin plastic sheets that you simply lay over your page in the area you want to add that 'little something extra' to. Some people choose to mark the areas pencil first, then remove the template and embellish. Some people prefer to just embellish while the template is over their layout. To use this method, it's recommended that you put a little removable adhesive (we recommend the Removable Dot Roller from Kokuyo) on the bottom of the template to keep it from sliding around.

What kinds of embellishments can you use with the templates? The possibilties are endless. Mark out areas for brads or eyelets, use the lines for even spaced journaling, use stickles, ink pads, embossing powder and more! Whatever you want to add to your page, the template will simply make it easier to space them evenly or place them in an eye pleasing design.

How much do they cost? Our large templates sell for $6.00, medium for $5, and small for only $3! The best part is that the templates are reusable so they are well worth the minor investment. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and designs. Priced as they are, you can afford to get one of each or just a few favorite designs to start out with.
